What type of tools have you used? How did they help? The tools I used the most are the clay rib and needle tool. They clay rub helped smooth out any clay I was working on to make it look and feel better. The needle tool I used to either cut clay or scratch in designs and details. How has your knowledge and understanding of tools changed?Honestly, I didn’t know anything about clay or sculpture when I came into this class. So, now I know what tools I’d need to use to smooth clay, cut clay, give clay texture. Which is a huge improvement from me only knowing that scoring and slipping was essential. What was your favorite material that you used this year?I’m not sure if this counts as a material but I loved using the underglaze. I found it so satisfying to be able to scratch the clay away to get my design. Plus, I could more or less start over if I didn’t like my design. Which project was your most successful?I would say my paper mache cat. Despite any odd lumps it has, I’m very proud of this cat. I used black, blue and red paint to create the galaxy design on the cat. Then flicking white paint to be the stars. Also the use of clear wire as whiskers made the piece more realistic and 100% 3D. Which project did you learn, grow, or develop the most from?I would have to cite my first project as the one I learned the most from. I’d never really worked with clay before so everything I needed to know I learned then. I learned how to handle clay and what tools to use for a specific texture. Now that the year has come to an end, here is a picture of my rabbit being hit by a big Captain America Tsum Tsum

For my tray set project I made a lead tray and a tomato bowl with a lid. The hard part about this was making the lid and a proper tray shape. The little leaves on the tomato was a challenge because of how thin they had to be to seem realistic. I really do like this piece, probably my favorite one because of how simple and cute it is.
For my mosaic piece I attempted to recreate the image on my phone case. I always get a lot of compliments on my case so I figured it would make a good mosaic. Everything about this project was difficult. I mostly struggled with the shape of the board and grouting the end piece. I’d call this piece an overall failure on my part. The color scheme is kind of nice, I like the bright colors which is what I wanted, but the blue hedgehog is unsettling to me.
For this project I chose to do a cat with a galaxy design on it. The hardest part was getting the shape of the cat right. This is one of my favorite pieces I made and I feel very proud of it. My favorite part is the little detail of stars in the cat. Also the 3D whiskers as opposed to my original idea of just painting them on.
For this project we built a pot of bowl of sorts and after firing them we wrapped them in aluminum foil with different items inside of it. Once put in the pit fire the items would burn onto the piece and leave different colors. For my piece I used hair, coffee grounds, salt, egg shells, and paper. The most difficult part was trying to smooth out the coils in my piece. It was very fun to be creating a piece that you weren’t completely sure how’d they turn out.
Sebastian IIIThis is my solo sgraffito project. I made a plate with a rabbit in the middle. I like how my rabbit turned out, I was afraid it wouldn’t stay together or that he would look wrong. I named him after my pet rabbit Sebastian (who I named after Romanian actor Sebastian Stan, thus he’s Sebastian III). (Left: Sebastian, my pet rabbit. Right: Sebastian Stan, actor.) One thing I’d change is actually using a mold for the plate. I also wanted to smooth out the actual plate but I didn’t know how to. Sgrafitto Pot/The Wrath of GodThis is a photo of the “pot” we made. It tells the story of a young girl who created a powerful image of handsome squidward and died because of her actions. The most difficult part was cutting out all the details. I learned I’m not very skilled with an exacto knife.
This is the progress of my tripod mug. I’ve been working on it for what feels like forever. The hardest part for me was getting the clay to form into the shape I wanted. While I was trying to get the shape the top began to take a square shape, it wasn’t intentional but it’s still nice. I had difficulty getting the details right and making sure they stayed during the process. The curl on top of the handle came out a little squished no matter how I did it, I didn’t want to continue restarting for times sake and for the integrity of the clay. I was satisfied with the color scheme, the colors all worked well together and the sun made for a beautiful focal point.
For our first sculpture assignment we were given a piece of clay and tools to create different textures in the clay; cloud (first image), rock/bark (second image), and fur (third image). For me the most challenging part was the rock/bark texture. I decided to grow with the cracked looking texture because it reminded me most of rock and the earth. Cloud was also difficult to get that fluffy look. I tried to use my tools to make a lumpy kind of texture. That seemed like the best option for me.
